Non-representational painting

Automaton

Automatons were created for human since ancient time. Nowadays with the tremendous advance in technology it seems like human's inventions has exceeded the limits, to that point that we are not longer in control of what humanity has created instead our inventions have taken control of us.

1-day performance

I chose to become blind and mute for one day in order to become aware of  the struggles of people with physical disabilities have to face in society. Struggles such as integration, social stigma, education, or accessibility.   As a granddaughter with a healthy and independent grandfather,  it was very shoking to find out that my grandfather was diagnosed with liver cancer in his 84th birthday. As a side effect of his advanced cancer, three month later, he lost his sight and voice, , and this is that reason why I chose to become blind and mute for my one-day performance, and this is when he started facing his most difficult battle in society. This time I decided to face society by  keeping my eyes closed and my mouth shut and become physically incapacitated in order to experience and understand, from the perspective of a physically incapacitated person, the struggles of a person with physical disabilities has to go through every day in a society where people without any physical disability are preferred, in order to raise awareness in society.

Derrick Adams

On November 25, I had the opportunity to meet Derrick Adams, who was a visiting artist lecture at the Guardia Community Collage. Derrick Adams is a multiple artist, he has been working in different disciplines of art. Adams' art is perceived based on the formation of objects, color, texture, symbols and meaning. His works are focused on western culture, popular culture. His art goes from sculpture, photography, painting, art performances, music, to the most recently of his works, collages( work on paper). On this opportunity Adams spoke about his art works and his tragetory on the field of art. He first started speaking about his works on photography. The Root of it All was my favorite photograph of himself. In this black and white 36x24 inches digial photo we can observe part of Adams' face, from his eyebrows to part of his nose. Adams' head holds a pyramid made of brick and at the top of the pyramid to the center there is the image of a single eye starring upwards. There is also a wall behing the pyramid and at each side of the pyramid it is reflected on the wall a shadow of the pyramid. The top of the photograph is dark shaded and as the photo goes down there is a slightly transition from dark to light. Another of my favorite photograph is called Totem, in this piece of art a single picture appears four times. Each picture shows the back of Adams' head and 3/4 of his shoulder. But what is special about this picture is his neck which is replaced by a wall of bricks, this photo reflects body and arquitecture. Both of this photograph belong to a collection of a serie of pieces of art called  BrickTop. Adams also showed us his works on sculpture. Some of his works are called, The Hidden Entrance; Four in One; He, Him, They, Them; Protect your Neck; Gorilla Mirror; Black Intellectual, which in my opinion was a very unique piece of art, this sculpture was mainly made  of composition notebooks, a red sweater tied around the sculpture, he created bricks with pieces of wood, he used paints and glass in order to create this art work, and one of my favorite Everything I Kill I Eat, this piece of art is disigned with utensiles to eat such as a fork and a spoon, at one of the end of each utensil there is a napkin tied. This piece of art was incorporated in one of his performances called Feed Them with the Long Spoon, in this performance we saw a picture of Adams feeding another person using the utensils of his  art work. This performance was focused on Americans watching tv while eating their dinner. Adams  took his art beyond an art gallery. He became his art works into performances. Some of Adams performances are titled, Go Stand Next to The Mountains, in this performance he presented his collection of art work of the same name. He explored the relationship between man and monument. This performance included  a series of shows such as dance, video projection, and scultural installation . His most recent performance is called Live and in Color, in this performance Adams introduced us to the early television announcers, when mostly about the medium was exaggerated. Adams included his larger than life figures collages in Live and in Color. One of Adams' most recent works are collages. He told us that he started creating collages when he realized he could not see or find on other artitsts' collages what he was looking for. Adams' Borough exhibition opened the door to the public to see a series of Adams' works based in mixed media. His works included sculpture and work on paper collages. In this exhibition Adams presented his serie of work called Deconstruction. Deconstruction included works of human figure collages that seemed to be in a state of being deconstructed and at the same time of being built. Some of his work in collages are titled, A Safe Place to Play; Stepping Out; Human structure Casting Shadow Part; Head 20; Head Study; American Gothic; Still Life and more. He also prepared modular structures of heads, in one of the modular head, inside, I could see in the picture that there were two portraits at each side of each perfil of the head, one portrait was a full body collage and the other was also a collage of the perfil of a head. Adams has also made performances based on a series of photographs, this photographs are characterized for the shadows of another person on the walls and the shadows of Adams. Some of his performance of shadows are called, I Crush a Lot; Can We Talk?; One Nation Under a Groove of Instruction; and The Sleepover Under and Inside. Lastly Adams has been also working on fashion. He opened an exhibition of a collection of clothes inspired by the 90’s in a gallery.

Brooklyn Museum

I

In my visit to the Crossing Brooklyn exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, I enjoyed three pieces of art. The first one  is called Smiley Bag Portrait by Nobutaka Aozaki, the next one is Amani Kites by Miguel Luciano, and the last one is Street Corner Project by Drew Hamilton.

These three pieces of art inspired me to make the following projects: Aozaki's art work was inspired by sidewalk portrait artists and decided to make people's portrait in takeout plastic bags. In my case I decided to make portraits of the members of my family in happy face balloons which surround the heart of Jesus.

Then inspired by Miguel Luciano, Amari kites, he made kites with life-size photographics of the portraits of random young people in Kenya, by doing this he connected the meaning of flying and freedom. Using  my project, above,  I also chose to use flying and freedom in the same way as Miguel Luciano in Amari Kites did but in my case I gave freedom to my family. I tied a chain of socks to each balloon and by this I wanted to mean that their feet were still attached to the ground until I untied them from the chain of socks and gave them the chance to fly and be free

For Drew Hamilton's art work, Street Corner Project, I decided to show what cannot be seemed by the audience in the exhibition, he shows us what we can find OUTSIDE of the corner of a street, a grocery store, a garbage can, and a mailbox, and I decided to show in this picture what we can find INSIDE of them.
