On November 10th, 2015, was my art's class second visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This time we went to explore The Leonard A. Lauder collection of Cubism, the most influential art movement of the early 20th Century. This exhibition displayed artworks of cubist artists such as Pablo Picasso, George Braque and Juan Gris. My goal was to understand, analyze and learn more about Cubism art.
During my visit, I could exhibit many pieces of art of cubist artits but Picasso's artwork was the most I felt interesed in. Picasso's artwork transmited me creativiness, uniqueness, curiosity and art.
Cubism opened up the world of art by focusing more on abstract meanings,art, rather than reality. Many of Picasso's works emphasized this abstract art which are portrait into human bodies. Picasso gave a lot of importance to the lines and geometrical shapes of his artworks such as on his work Standing Female Nude. Drawing of a muscular woman where the body seems to be more prominent than her head and a separation of color from lines is percived. Women with a Book by Picasso is another of its works where a woman is portrayed, this time sitting on a chair, reading a book, full of shadows and what it is interesting is the woman's face which seems to me to trasmit sadness, or melancholy which I felt after looking at that painting. These were two of my favorities Piccaso's artworks.
The Cubism's exhibition opened my mind to new different styles of art and I gained more understanting of Cubism art style, specially to Picasso's artworks which I enjoyed.
MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
During my visit to the Museum of Modern Art, I could explore many painting galleries from the second to the fifth floor. Most of my favorite paintings were located in the fifth floor. Paintings of artists such as Paul Gauguin “ The Seed of the Areoi" and “Washer women”, John D. Graham “Two Sisters”, Vincent Van Gogh “ The Olives Trees", James Ensor “ Mask Confronting Death", Jose Clemente Orozco “ Zapatistas", and Henri Rousseau “ The Dream", called my attention at first sight. Between all these paintings there were two which I like them most. First, The Seed of the Areoi by Paul Guaguin, this painting reflexes and transmits what the painter could not find in Tahiti, an enchanting paradise. This means the painter was trying to recover what he considered was lost by the French colonization and bring to life what he thought was the real Tahiti. This painting is full of colors , strong and vibrant colors, characteristics of a exotic place as Tahiti. This painting portrayed the image of a woman, naked, of dark skin, mostly tanned by the sun. She carries a blue bird in her left hand. She seems to be calmed and relaxed by what is around her, mountains, clouds, grass, flowers, a table with exotic fruits. She is sat in a navy blue cloth which at the bottom is made of different patterns such as of a bird and a flower. She also decorated her hair with some flowers around her left ear and is wearing her hair down. These characteristics of her including the cloth makes me think that she belongs to some tribe. I like this painting because it transmits me emotions and feelings of culture, traditions, peace, makes feel relaxed, and mostly remind me of the beauty of nature and its freedom. Another paintings I liked was painted by Henri Rousseau, “The Dream” I like this painting because at the moment I saw it I felt like I was being transported to another place. This painting makes me feel that someone can be transported to the unimaginable in seconds and still have some reality on it. This painting portrays a woman, naked, lying in a sofa which is placed in a jungle. What seems interesting to me is that this woman does not seems to be terrified by the presence of savage, wild animals as well as of a person who is standing in the middle of the jungle and who seems to belong to a tribe, with different traditions to hers. She is just staring calmly to what is in front of her. I think this woman was actually in other place very different than a jungle and suddenly started dreaming about the jungle and was transported to it as Rousseau said “Entering a dream" without leaving part of her reality that is why she brought with her her sofa.
